Renovation of Marble Flooring at Roman Baths by Green Man Using LTP Products

LTP surface renovation and maintenance products have been employed for a significant marble floor restoration at the UNESCO World Heritage Site, The Roman Baths in Somerset. The task, undertaken by Green Man, experts in floor restoration, involved a comprehensive area of original marble flooring throughout the Prom Corridor. In addition, Green Man restored modular carpets and bespoke oriental style rugs within The Pump Room, Kingston Room, and Drawing Room.

Marble floor restoration at The Roman Baths

Built around 70 AD in the city of Bath, the Roman Baths is one of the most well-preserved ancient Roman sites in the world. Built as an extravagant bathing ‘thermae’ and social hub, it is still filled daily with 1,170,000 liters of hot spring water reaching 46°C. The marble floor restoration was conducted predominantly overnight by a six-person team from Green Man, completing most of the project in a single night.

The decorative marble flooring across various corridors in the upper Roman Baths complex included several types of white, black, and brown stone. The tiles had an aging topical seal, previously applied for a durable, reflective finish, which had become scratched and dulled over time. Green Man used LTP Solvex, a high-performance, non-caustic stripper, to remove the seal. A weighted rotary machine then lifted the softened coating, and commercial wet vacs removed the residue. The tiles were subsequently cleaned with LTP Grimex deep cleaner.

Once the marble floor had dried, six coats of LTP Ironwax Gloss were applied over several nights. This self-shine acrylic sealer enhances the color and texture, protects against staining and stubborn dirt, and simplifies maintenance.

‘This is probably the most walked upon floor we ever treat, so it was crucial to achieve the perfect finish. LTP Solvex and Ironwax Gloss provided the ideal combination for safely restoring and renewing the precious marble’s shine and protection,’ explained Jon Gardner of Green Man.

Ongoing maintenance will now involve periodic mopping with LTP Floorshine, reinforcing the protection on surfaces sealed with LTP Ironwax Gloss.
